A Not-So-Quick Update

When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Looking back at my blog I’ve realized that I haven’t given a real honest-to-goodness post in a while. Snippets here and there, yes. But not real meat ‘n potatoes.

*sigh* Is this deployment over yet?

The deployment is plodding along. Well, his, anyway. But then I head out to Ft. Meade the first week of August to go to DINFOS, or the Defense Information School. This is the last of the training I have to do to be ready to learn all that the Navy wants me to learn. I won’t get out of the school until the first week of October.  Looking at the schedule, it looks like we might have a four day weekend for Labor Day, so Huzzy and I are hoping that one of us can fly to see the other. If we are lucky, we’ll get a few days to a week total between now and when I return in October to see each other. Then, we can start living together as a married couple… well, until his next deployment, which isn’t too far after October.

Seriously… can you believe that I go to the school in just over a MONTH and TWO MONTHS from then is October? You hear that ladies (and gents!) who have spouses that are deployed? October is not that far off!

And on the Navy Reserve front… my orders may not go through! No folks, no need to check the date and think this is a post from my cancelled orders to Hawaii from April. Or my canceled orders to Central/South America in May. Nope, these are my order, my two weeks’ AT to South Korea. Yes, we are working on the third set of (hopefully not) canceled orders.

Remember when I talked about being TNPQed (Temporarily Not Physically Qualified)? Well, my doctor has said I am all set to go back full duty with no restrictions. Only, my reserve center (NOSC) isn’t satisfied with the letter. They need more information. So I have to go back tomorrow and get it. Then hope that my PCM will have time to sign it. Because in order for me to go on AT this year, my orders have to be approved by 30JUN or they won’t be funded. In order for my orders to be approved, I cannot be TNPQed.

Tomorrow is 29JUN. Ya’ll know how quick the Navy (or any branch) is to get things done. They are even talking about having to go through BUMED to get approval because SOMEONE in the NOSC somehow put in that my problem was orthopedic. Never has it been orthopedic. It’s always been muscular/nerves. If BUMED has to get involved, there is NO WAY I’ll be able to get off TNPQ in time for my orders to be approved.

And that sucks. That totally sucks. I’ve been looking forward to going to South Korea for months. Every time I had problems with the cancel/no cancel on my orders, I’ve always told myself, “Well, at least you have South Korea.”  And now that is in limbo.

In other news, I’m very very excited that a friend from Michigan is coming to visit Seattle/Portland with one of her friends and they are going to stay with me for a bit. Di was one of the first people I got to know when I moved to a new school my sophomore year. I remember being invited to her 16th birthday party. She wanted a “grownup” party, so we all dressed in formals and were served tea and cookies.

Seriously. No joke. We had a tea party. HA!

Then we went into her house and Di picked up a guitar and we all started singing songs. Sitting on the floor. In our formals. Good times, good times.

Di is the ying to my yang. She is an earthy soul who is a kind of “namaste” calming spirit. Which I’ll need. Because while she’s here, the landlords from hell are going to be doing what is going to become their monthly “inspection” of the house… both inside and out. Because apparently, I’ve violated the lease.  She doesn’t know it yet, but if she’s here, she’s going to be my witness when the landwhorelords come in. If not, my friend R will.

Yup, we are horrible, rotten no-good tenants because there were two occasions where I didn’t mow the lawn for two weeks. Once because it rained for two weeks straight and the grass didn’t ever dry out enough to be cut. And the second time because… uh, it rained and then I was gone for five days to a conference in Baltimore. Then it rained some more after I got back.

Yes, we are horrible tenants. Landlords beware. And be afraid, very afraid because when it comes to our rent… we pay the day it’s  due. Oh no. Very horrible tenants. Never rent to us. Because we just may not mow the lawn for two weeks. And that is–apparently–unacceptable.

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #1

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In(please feel free to use this!)

As I mentioned in this post, I love learning more about my fellow MilSpouse bloggers. So I’ve decided to create a weekly meme. It’s going to be something that I hope  a lot of MilSpouses join in. I really hope we can learn more about each other too.

The meme is going to be: MilSpouse Friday Fill-ins.  And when I say MilSpouse, I mean significant others, too!

Each week, I’ll post a list of questions on Thursday (so you can have your blog ready on Friday). Come back here on Friday (like today!) and enter your blog post into Mr. Linky below so others know who else participated and we can all visit other blogs. Please leave a comment too! And please feel free to use the button above!

This week’s questions are:

1. How did you and your spouse/significant other meet?
Oh man. This is a story that involves (legal) drugs and bad decisions. I dedicated a whole page to it. Long story short: Online (on a site called Idiot! Personals. Or was it HooYa! Personals? Something like that ;) ). I let him meet me the first time while I was on VERY strong pain relieving narcotics. I made bad decisions. Luckily, they turned out very well!

2. What is the best thing about being a MilSpouse?
I think the best thing is other MilSpouses and the community we have. That insta-connection when you meet another. Also, I’m very, very proud of my husband for what he does. And I know what he does has a GLOBAL effect for the good.

3. What is the hardest thing about being a MilSpouse?
I think the hardest thing is the lack of communication (especially for submarines) and the constant worry. But the good BY FAR outweigh the bad.

4. What is your favorite dish?
Why did I ask this? This is one of my hardest things to answer in the world. The answer is: it depends. Right now, I’m craving the pot roast that is in the crockpot. But I also love my homemade enchiladas. And desserts… let’s not even get started on desserts. You can see some of my favorite recipes on my recipes page.  I (try to) post a new recipe each week.

5. If you could change one thing in this world, what would it be?
I would have to say tolerance. I think if everyone took a step back and got off their high horses for a moment, they’d realize that most everyone’s ideas and wants are very similar… just on a different plane. Take religion for example. Most pray to one being or one being that is superior to others. Who is to say that THAT being isn’t the same? We just worship differently… and have different customs. Native Americans believed everything had a spirit… part of the Great Spirit.  Who’s to say the Great Spirit isn’t the same as God and Allah?

Anyway, I think that if we all just stood back and celebrated the DIFFERENCES in the world instead of criticizing them… we’d all be better off.

New Meme: MilSpouse Friday Fill-ins

I love learning more about my fellow MilSpouse bloggers. So I’ve decided to create a weekly meme. It’s going to be something that I hope  a lot of MilSpouses join in. I really hope we can learn more about each other too.

Each week, I’ll post a list of questions on Thursday (so you can have your blog ready on Friday). This week is a bit different because I want to give people time to see this blog. Come back to my blog on Friday to see my answers to the questions and to also submit your blog to my Mr. Linky widget that day so others can see it as well!

I’ll be using this button… please feel free to use it yourself!

Thursday Thirteen #14: 13 Things I Love About Washington

Where thou art – that – is Home.
~Emily Dickinson

It’s time for the Thursday Thirteen again (okay so I missed a week or two… or months, whatever). If you have a Thursday Thirteen of your own, leave your website in the comments section and I’ll try my darndest to visit it :)

This week’s TT is dedicated to my new home state. I love it so much. Huzzy and I plan to be here as long as we can. And we are planning on retiring here when we get to that point.

The Top 13 Reasons I Love Washington State

  1. This state has the best roads I’ve ever seen. I’m coming from Michigan where everything is under road construction, but no road will be fixed unless a pothole swallows a car. Seriously. They won’t patch until the pothole is nearly a foot wide.  Just the other day, I went through road construction here where they were tearing up the road. Um, I’m didn’t even notice ANY potholes on the road and yet it’s being fixed. Yay!

Mt. Rainier barely seen through the haze of the setting sun.

  2. I love being near the water. Coming from Michigan, we were never were more than an hour from a Great Lake. I love being so close to water everywhere here.
  3. Speaking of water… I am LOVING the tides here. I love how it changes the beaches (if you can call rocks that).
  4. I love the house I’m in and the large backyard for the dogs (even though my landlords are kinda a pain in the rear)
  5. I love how green everything is. Even when we arrived in winter and there weren’t any leaves on the trees, the evergreens and the grass were still green.
  6. I love the weather. When it “rains” it is 99% of the time still LIGHT outside. Nothing like in Michigan when it rains and the sky turns so dark it could be night. Heck, most of the time when they call for a rainy day, it only rains for like 10% of the day. In Michigan, if it’s a rainy day, it RAINS ALL DAY.
  7. Speaking of rain… uh, what they call rain here is what we call “sprinkles” and “misting” in Michigan. People freak out here when it actually rains hard.
  8. People freak out with snow too. If lucky, they may get 10 inches of snow total in a year. Compare that to the 170+ inches we received last year in Michigan and… heck, I’ll take the 10 inches. And ya know what, I’ll actually ENJOY the snow. I hate snow in Michigan because It. Never. Stops. But here, I’ll take it!
  9. And the temperature? Uh… yeah, 40 isn’t that cold (not when you PRAY for windchills above 0 for weeks on end in Michigan and cheer when they hit 20 above).  And there is no freakin’ humidity here. Seriously. I was here when the “OhMyGodI’mGonnaDie” heat hit last summer. All 90-100 degrees of it. And I was confused because it felt like 80 to me. I like not walking outside and being drenched in sweat immediately. Or feeling as though you’ve stepped into a sauna so hot your breath is taken away. Or so hot that if you sit on a penny in a hot car, Lincoln is permanently burned on your thigh (ah-hem.. Sespi!)
  10. This place is really dog friendly. Michigan is not.
  11. I’m absolutely loving the military spouses I’ve met here. I think I’m making more friends here than I have ever.
  12. I love the mountains. Love, love, LOVE them. Olympics to my west and Cascades to my east. My breath is taken away every time I come over a hill and see the snow-capped mountains. Especially on clear days when I can see Mt. Rainier looming like it’s just a few miles away.
  13. And the best reason ever: This where Huzzy will return when he comes back from sea. This is our home.
