Merry Christmas… Submariner Style

T’was the Night Before Christmas-Submarine Style
By Sean Keck

T‘was the night before Christmas, and what no one could see,
The men with the dolphins were under the sea.
Most of the crew was flat on their backs,
Snoring and dreaming all snug in their racks.

Those men on watch were making their rounds,
Some manning the planes or listening for sounds.
Back in maneuvering or down in the room,
They all hoped the oncoming watch would come soon.

I‘d finished some PM’s whose time was now due,
And hoped for some sleep, even an hour or two.
Against better judgment I took a short stroll,
And found myself wandering into control.

The Nav had the Conn, the COW was in place,
The COB had the Dive and a scowl on his face.
The helm and the planes were relaxed but aware,
The QM and ET were discussing a dare.

To comply with the orders the Nav told the Dive,
To bring the boat up with minimum rise.
The orders were given and soon they were there,
At periscope depth with a scope in the air.

The QM confirmed our position with care,
The broadcast was copied, we brought in some air.
The Nav on the scope let out a small cry,
He shook his head twice and rubbed at his eyes.

He looked once again to find what it was,
That interrupted his sweep and caused him to pause.
Try as he might there was nothing to see,
So down went the scope and us to the deep.

I asked what it was that caused his dismay,
He sheepishly said, “I’m embarrassed to say.
It could have been Northern Lights or a cloud,
Or a meteorite,” he wondered aloud.

“But to tell you the truth I guess I must say,
Whatever it was it looked like a sleigh.
And though it passed quickly and never was clear,
I almost believe it was pulled by reindeer.”

We laughed and teased him and I got up to go,
When our moment was broken by “Conn, Radio.”
They told us a message was just coming in,
We looked at the depth gauge and started to grin.

“Radio, Conn, I feel safe to say,
Your attempt at a joke is too long delayed.
If it had been sooner it might have been neat,
But I doubt we’re receiving at four-hundred feet.”

“Conn, Radio, you can come down and see,
We’re not playing games to any degree.”
I headed aft with nothing better to do,
Surprised by the fact it was still coming through.

It stopped and was sent to control to be read,
The Nav read it slowly and scratched at his head.
Then again he began but this time aloud,
To those that now waited, a curious crowd.

“To you Denizens of the Deep and men of the sea,
Who risk your life daily so others stay free.
I rarely have seen you on this, my big night,
For far too often you are hidden from sight.

But purely by luck I saw you tonight,
As your scope coaxed the plankton to glow in the night.
And lucky for me I’ve finally won,
The chance to say thanks for all you have done.

I know that you miss your families at home,
And sometimes you feel as if you’re alone.
But trust what I say and I’ll do what’s right,
I‘ll take something special to your families tonight.

Along with the gifts I’ll take to your kin,
I‘ll visit their dreams and leave word within.
They’ll hear of your love, and how you miss them,
I‘ll tell them that soon you’ll be home again.

It might not be much I know that is true,
To thank you for all the things that you do.
But I’ll do what I can, while you do what’s right,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight.”

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please keep in your thoughts those who are serving away from their families… and for those who are spending this holiday season without their loved ones because they gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Bring Him Home, Santa

I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart so long.  If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can play together all night.
~Bill Watterson, Calvin & Hobbes

I’ll admit to being very emotional lately. But this song makes me cry no matter what. And I had forgotten about it. That is, until I heard it on the radio on the drive home tonight. And misery loves company, so I’m going to share it with you.

I’m warning you… grab a tissue now.

The Not-So-Glamorous Aspect of Military Life

If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden.
~Attributed to Claudia Ghandi

As much as I love Army Wives, and as much as Hollywood glamorizes the life of a military spouse, it’s just not like that. Sure, we do get to see our men in hot uniforms and there are the joyous homecomings. And sure, you do usually get to become good friends with the spouses around you. But there are also times when your hot man in uniform is nowhere around, joyous homecomings seem worlds away and you are too new, or just haven’t met enough spouses yet.

I’ve been here in Washington for nine months (okay, well, 6 1/2 since I was gone for 2 1/2 months at Fort Meade). I’ve met some great wives and even one, who is quickly becoming my best friend. But she has a two year old and a two month old. So it’s not easy for her to drop everything and go if something happens.

You see, I blacked out today at the grocery store. As in, I was getting ready to pay for my stuff and the wave of blackness just roared in and I had to sit down before I fell. I vaguely remember hearing the cashier call for a manager and one shopper stopped by and told me I needed to put my head between my legs (though I know this, there was no way my legs were functioning at this point). A manager (or three, ha!) came over and were fussing over me. Luckily, I was feeling better… enough to start getting embarrassed.

They brought me some water and asked me if they could call someone to come and get me. That’s when the waterworks started. Because Huzzy wasn’t here to come and get me. And because the only other people I knew I could call have their own stuff to deal with (the two year old and newborn and another family that has four kids). I was also near the base, so they would have had to drive a short distance to where I was, and then a 40-45 minute to my house and then the same distance back. I couldn’t ask anyone to do that.

They asked if they could call me a taxi. Um, no. Do you have any idea how much a taxi would cost for that distance? Besides, I knew I was feeling better. So I just went out to my car and waited a bit before leaving.

I was fine. I made it home with no problem.

And before you worry about me, I’m fine. It all started with me having two fillings on Tuesday and I started feeling nauseous that evening. I was fine the next day until the evening and then I’ve been feeling icky ever since. I’ve had a headache, too, and my gums have just been ACHING. Even 800mg of ibuprofin haven’t helped.

So I went back to the dentist today. I totally wish Huzzy was here to drive me because I wasn’t feeling well.  The dentist ended up saying he didn’t believe the nausea and headaches were linked to the fillings, but that my gums WERE inflamed quite a bit. He rinsed out (BENEATH my gum’s ya’ll… can we say OUCH?!) the area with an antibiotic rinse and instructed me to rinse at home with salt water. Yum. I’m also supposed to watch for any additional swelling. If it swells more, I’m to call their answering service this weekend. If it isn’t better by Monday, I’m to come in again.

Did I mention I have a sincere fear of the dentist? Going in twice in one week (both of which were PAINFUL) was horrendous.

So yeah, military life isn’t glamorous. Don’t believe Hollywood. They never get it right.

So what was your least glamorous moment as a military spouse?

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #25

Christmas is a necessity.  There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.
~Eric Sevareid

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In(please feel free to use this!)

MilSpouses who are participating in Secret Santa… I have just 10 people who have not sent their gifts yet. These need to be in the mail NOW.  Please remember to email me at wifeofasailor(at)gmail(dot)com as soon as you send your package out.  If you have not RECEIVED your gift by 23DEC, please let me know and I’ll see what’s going on. Hope you are all enjoying it!

I love learning more about my fellow MilSpouse bloggers. So I created a weekly meme. Each week, I’ll post a list of questions on Thursday (so you can have your blog ready on Friday). Come back here on Friday (like today!) and enter your blog post into Mr. Linky below so others know who else participated and we can all visit other blogs. Please leave a comment too! And please feel free to use the button above!

This week’s questions are:

1. What is the best gift you have ever received or given? from Jessica Lynn Writes
I have no idean overall. My best two I’ve given this year are the Nook to Huzzy (yes, he got it back in September), which he is LOVING underway since he doesn’t have to take books with him that take up tons of space and I gave my mom a quilted double blue star from Bluebird Crafting. She cried when she opened it. She had no idea what a blue star mother was and she was proud that she has two children in the service (both my husband and I).

2. Do you celebrate holidays differently when your loved one is deployed/gone or do you keep tradition? from The Albrecht Squad
I didn’t last year because I spent it with my mom and brother… it was just like Christmases before Huzzy. This year, yes. I’m hanging out with friends so it’ll be entirely different. But Huzzy and I will celebrate it when he returns.

3. If you celebrate Christmas, do you put an angel, star or something else on the top of your tree?
I have an angel. An angel with gold wings and a pink dress. I bought it for my tree the first year I was on my own. That was nearly 10 years ago and she’s moved cross-country with me.

4. What are your three favorite websites?
Let’s see… Google, Twitter and Facebook. That’s sad, isn’t it?

5. On your man do you prefer… boxers, briefs or boxer briefs? Or commando? (yeah, I’m starting to get desperate for questions!)?
Boxer briefs! I find them extremely sexy!

Please don’t forget to add your blog link to Mr. Linky below by clicking on it. But also if you are not participating in MilSpouse Friday Fill-In this week, please do not put your link on there… I will remove it. It is unfair to others who do participate.

Note: I will not be hosting MilSpouse Friday Fill-In until the New Year since next week it’s on Christmas Eve and the following week it’s on New Year’s Eve! So…. I’ll see ya’ll back here next year. Here’s to a good new year for all of us!
