Grand Rapids LipDub
You can never go home again, but the truth is you can never leave home, so it’s all right.
~Maya Angelou
It seems as though a few months ago Newsweek called my favorite Michigan city, Grand Rapids, one of the Top 10 Dying Cities. I have no idea how they could say this because, while it is in Michigan, it’s not only fabulous, but booming!
I went to college in the Grand Rapids area and would have no problem walking in the streets downtown at night (now, some of the outlying suburbs on the southeast side… probably not but all cities have this problem). I had no fear taking classes on the downtown campus that would see me leaving the campus after 9 p.m.
The city is situated along a river and there are several green areas and the streets are always kept beautiful.
So, in response to the Newsweek article, the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan banded together and came up with this fantastic video that showcases the city and the spirit of the residents. This video is the first and only thing that has made me homesick in the year since I’ve moved from the state.
MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #42
A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.

I love learning more about my fellow MilSpouse bloggers. So I created a weekly meme. Each week, I’ll post a list of questions on Thursday (so you can have your blog ready on Friday). Come back here on Friday (like today!) and enter your blog post into Mr. Linky below so others know who else participated and we can all visit other blogs. Please leave a comment too! This week’s questions are:
1. Do you think civilians, in general, understand the meaning of Memorial Day?
I think many may have an idea of what it is, but I think the true meaning of it is buried in SALES! PICNICS! CELEBRATION OF THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER! and all that jazz. Growing up, my mom made sure I knew what it was about but Memorial Day was still more about the unofficial start to summer.
2. What are your plans for the Memorial Day Weekend?
I have no clue. Something has happened (I’ll blog about it later) and now Huzzy is trying to get immediate leave to go to Illinois to help his brother out and help with the estate. Don’t worry, nothing has happened to a person… just an unexpected schedule change and now he can’t go in July like he planned.
3. What skill/talent do you wish you had? submitted by The 3 Turners
I know I have the talent to come up with great photo ideas/angles/shots and to critique them after they are taken… but I want to get better at the actual execution of them!
4. Which came first: the chicken or the egg? submitted by I Married Into The Army
I’d say the chicken. Who else would sit on the egg to keep it warm? My big butt would crush it.
5. What is the best thing about your post (base)? The worst? submitted by Randomly, Robyn
I like the fact that our base is nearly entirely wooded. They kept the trees if they didn’t have to take them down. Also, if you enter Main Gate… you’ll come up over a huge hill and the site of gorgeous snow-capped (most of the year) mountains greet you. I swear I hear Heavenly Choirs sing as I come over that hill. Love it.
The worst? Well, for me the worst is the winters that are drizzly rain and cloudy… but that worst is better than living in Michigan where they are downright bitter cold and cloudy.

This week’s questions are:
1. What is one of the things you always do special when your husband returns from a deployment? submitted by Keep Calm and Soldier On
I usually have a crockpot of something going for him… that way no matter when he gets home (boat schedules are so unpredictable), he has a hot, homemade meal ready. Anything tastes good after powdered milk and fake eggs (so Huzzy says).
2. What do you do to help your spouse and/or yourself re-adjust after a deployment or long separation? submitted by Diapers, Dogs and Deployments
We are constantly doing this so it’s pretty normal for us. We generally take the first weekend just to goof off… no plans and no commitments.
3. Are you a crazy coupon clipper (I’m becoming one, so share your secrets with me)? submitted by Married My Airman
I forget my coupon book ALL. THE. TIME. So I can’t tell you I’m crazy nor good at it. My secret would be… take the dang book with you!
4. What’s your most treasured memory of you and your spouse (not counting your wedding – that’s a given)? submitted by Scrubs, ACUs and One Crazy Ride
It would have to be one of two things: either when Huzzy took me to Ruby Beach for a few hours during our honeymoon (he wouldn’t tell me where we were going) or going whitewater rafting with him a year and a half ago.
5. If you could live anywhere overseas, what would you pick and why? submitted by Little Moments Like This
It’s so hard to think about because we’ll never be given the opportunity due to Huzzy’s job… but I guess I’d have to say Japan or Italy.
