It seems as though a few months ago Newsweek called my favorite Michigan city, Grand Rapids, one of the Top 10 Dying Cities. I have no idea how they could say this because, while it is in Michigan, it’s not only fabulous, but booming!

I went to college in the Grand Rapids area and would have no problem walking in the streets downtown at night (now, some of the outlying suburbs on the southeast side… probably not but all cities have this problem). I had no fear taking classes on the downtown campus that would see me leaving the campus after 9 p.m.

The city is situated along a river and there are several green areas and the streets are always kept beautiful.

So, in response to the Newsweek article, the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan banded together and came up with this fantastic video that showcases the city and the spirit of the residents. This video is the first and only thing that has made me homesick in the year since I’ve moved from the state.

This one is from my own home.  Skah is our now 21 month old Great Pyrenees. We found out when he was 10 months old that he is completely deaf. We specifically chose this breed (well, Huzzy did) because he wanted a guard dog that he could feel comfortable leaving his family with whenever the Navy called him away (which is often, since he’s active duty).

While I was gone drilling (I’m a Navy reservist) the other week, he saw a big, scary garbage can while on a walk at my mom’s house and started barking a “low, mean, scary bark that meant business” (according to my mom). He really was trying to protect her. Which is awesome, because that means his guarding ability is starting.

But it’s not quite all the way there, as evidenced by the other night’s fun….

These Sailors have a lot of time on their hands while they are deployed at sea… and they are very creative and hilarious!  I also love that some of the officers got in on it and were joking around with the enlisted guys. That’s some team building there!
