A Patriot Day Giveaway

The whole inspiration of our life as a nation flows out from the waving folds of this banner.
~Author Unknown

It’s been nine years. I’m sure we can all pinpoint where we were when we heard about the Twin Towers being hit. And then the Pentagon. And then a crash in a Pennsylvania field. And, of course, the fall of the Twin Towers. I sure can.

I was in college. A resident assistant to freshmen girls. I remember the panic, the absolute feeling of vulnerability… that my great nation had actually been penetrated by an enemy–something that hadn’t been seen for two generations. Since Pearl Harbor. Though I was far away from what was happening, looking back, it made me grow up a bit. And I learned that we didn’t live in a peaceful, idyllic world.

I remember just after it happened, you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing houses upon houses proudly flying the American flag. Everyone did. I often wonder what happened to that… will it take another tragedy to make people patriotic again?

Today commemorates that day nine years ago. It was proclaimed Patriot Day by President Bush in 2002 and signed into law not too long after.  And in honor of Patriot Day, I’m offering a giveaway, courtesy of CVS Flags.  CVS Flags has graciously offered my readers a chance for one to win a 3×5  U.S. Flag or a Military Flag.

And you know what is extra awesome about CVS Flags? All their flags are made right here in America!

Overseas and thinking you can’t enter? You’re wrong… they ship to APO addresses, so join in the contest!

The contest will run from today through 11:59 p.m. PST on Friday, September 17, 2010.

You have several ways to enter the contest. First and foremost, you must leave a comment telling me which flag you’d choose and why. Once you leave a comment, you can also earn additional entries by:

  1. Become a follower of this blog and leave a comment letting me know you are.
  2. Write a blog post (with link to this post) about this contest and leave a comment linking back to your blog post.
  3. Tweet about it (with a link to this post) and leave a comment with your tweet URL. You can do this up to twice a day.

If you start today, that gives you 17 chances to win!

Okay, now for the rules:

  1. You must make a comment and tell me which flag you’d choose and why. If you win, you don’t necessarily have to stick to this choice, so don’t stress over it.
  2. For EVERY entry, you must add a new comment. If you answer #1 and tell me you are a blog follower in one comment, that will only count as one entry.
  3. The winner will be chosen by Random.org.
  4. I need to contact the winner somehow, so if you don’t leave a link to your blog, please leave an e-mail address! If I can’t contact you, I’ll be choosing someone else.

Good luck! Oh, and I should tell you that CVS Flags is kindly providing me with a flag of my own in return for this contest. I’m totally excited about receiving mine!

Summer Contest for Military Families

This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.
~Elmer Davis

In honor of Memorial Day, I’m so excited to have been asked to help announce the 2nd Annual US Military Family Contest. I participated in it last year and became a semi-finalist. This year, I’m excited to announce that it has been opened to not just military wives, but ALL families… including husbands of those serving :)

Here’s what Sara said about her contest (yes, Sara Taney Humphreys from The Amoveo Series):

Last year, as a special thank you to our service members and their families, I held a very special contest for Military Wives. It turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience. I had the privilege of meeting several incredible women and their beautiful families. It’s so easy to forget that there are real people who are deeply affected by the conflict overseas. Hearing the personal stories of these families helped me remember that our troops are husbands, fathers, brothers and sons who are immensely loved and sorely missed.

I have decided to make this an annual contest. I am very excited to report that ASMBA-STAR, an outstanding organization for Vets and their families, has agreed to continue their partnership with me.

This contest will run from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Once again, a portion of my annual book sales will be donated to ASMBA-STAR.

Who is eligible? This year I’ve opened the contest up to ALL U.S. Military Families. Moms, Dads, Sons, Daughters, Wives, Husbands, Sisters, Brothers. If you have a family member that is serving our country…tell us about them!

How do you enter? Send an email to sarataneyhumphreys@hotmail.com with a picture of you and your family member in uniform. Tell us a bit about what branch he/she serves in, where you’ve been stationed, challenges and so forth.
Please put “2nd Annual Military Families Contest” in the subject line.

Once a week, beginning Memorial Day weekend, I will pick one entrant to be highlighted on my blog. These weekly entrants are semi-finalists. Labor Day weekend I will select three winners.

Second Prize: A $25 Amazon Gift Card, a signed copy of “The Amoveo Legacy” and a Team Amoveo T-Shirt.

First Prize: A $50 Amazon Gift Card, a signed copy of “The Amoveo Legacy” and a Team Amoveo T-Shirt.

Grand Prize: A book signing event at their local Bookstore and the winner will be the special guest of honor. 5 Free Signed copies of “The Amoveo Legacy. (1 for them and 4 of their friends) A $100 Amazon Gift card and a Team Amoveo T-Shirt.

So… go forth and enter! Check out Sara’s blog post on the contest. Good luck!

A Winner!

Each day comes bearing its own gifts.  Untie the ribbons.
~Ruth Ann Schabacke

I still don’t have internet connection at the new house yet. So in order to write this post, I’ve had to go to a cute little diner that has wi-fi. It’s not so bad since they have awesome pies ;)

When I get Internet connection and some time, I’ll have to tell you about our cross-country trip. For now, I think the only thing ya’ll are looking for is to find out who the winner is. I was surprised at how FEW Wal-Mart trucks we actually saw. Had we been counting, say, FedEx trucks, the number would have been upwards of 300-500. But apparently, Wal-Mart trucks aren’t as prevalent on the road.  Heck, we saw three times as many police cars as WalMart (we started counting for a prizeless contest on my Facebook page).

Several of you were close. Very close. However, one person hit the nail on the head. I mean, right on. She needs to go on The Price is Right. The contest was guessing the number without going over.

We saw exactly 43 WalMart trucks. And MrsSgtB from Married to the Military guessed 43.  So you win! Congrats!

Please send me your mailing information [wifeofasailor (at) gmail (dot) com].  Let me know the things you like (clothing, restaurants, fun places for the kids) and I’ll research the area where you live and what gift cards are available here that will work where you are. I’ll send you a list of choices and you can just let me know what you want!

Yay! That was fun.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post. It’s all about how Huzzy and I met as we celebrate our FIRST anniversary. Hint: it involves narcotics … legal ones… and bad decisions that turned out to be good!

A Moving Celebration Contest!

If winning isn’t everything, why do they keep score?
~Vince Lombardi

Yeah, I know, I haven’t posted since I came back from DCO school this past weekend. A whole post is going to come on that. But that’s not what’s exciting right now…

*insert song and dance here* I’m going to see Huzzy in two days and a wakeup!  I’m going to be living in Washington in just about 10 days!

And that, folks, deserves a treat. And since I feel guilty treating myself, I’m going to treat you. We’re gonna have a little contest.

Contest: Guess how many Wal-Mart trucks we are going to see on our trip.  (Why? Because I swear you see them everywhere!)

Contest Rules: Come on down… you’re the next contestant on your guess is right! The winner will be the person who comes closest to the correct answer without going over. In the event of a tie, I will use random.org to name the winner. Sorry folks, but only one guess per entry. The contest will end at 2359PST (or 11:59pm PST for you non-Mil-Spouses) on Sunday, March 7. I will announce the winner as soon as I can… I might not Internet access for a while so be patient!

Contest Tips: We will be traveling from Southwest Michigan to the Seattle area. However, due to northern mountain pass closures, we are planning to travel there via St. Louis, Albuquerque, NM and Las Vegas (no, we are not stopping at the slots!). That comes to around 3,200 miles for our trip. So, plan for 3,200 miles of Wal-Mart truck sightings. We are also going to be driving straight through for the majority of it (stopping only once or twice to sleep in a hotel) so that may play a factor in how many we see. Makes me wonder if we’ll see more during the day when it’s easier to stay awake and during “normal” business hours or more at night when the semis have the road to themselves. Hmmm….

How to Enter: First and foremost, you MUST leave a comment on this post with your 1st guess. However, there are many other ways to increase your chances of winning:

  1. One (1) additional entry if you: Follow my blog and leave a comment (with another guess as to how many you think we’ll see) on this post letting me know that you are following. And if you are already a follower, let me know via a comment (with another guess as to how many you think we’ll see) you will automatically get an entry… uh, as long as you remind me that you are a follower.
  2. One (1) additional entry if you: Put me on your blog’s blogroll and leave a comment (with another guess as to how many you think we’ll see) with the link to it. And if you already have me on your blog roll, leave that link in a comment (with another guess as to how many you think we’ll see) on this post for your entry.
  3. One (1) additional entry if you: Blog about the contest on your blog and leave a comment (with another guess as to how many you think we’ll see) on this post.
  4. One (1) additional entry per day for each day you: Tweet about this contest. While you can Tweet as many times as you want a day, only one per day will count! Don’t forget to @wifeyofasailor so I know you did it. Leave a comment (with another guess as to how many you think we’ll see) with your Twitter name, the time you Tweeted and what you said.

That’s a total of 16 chances to win if you start today!

Now, I’m sure you want to know what the prize is. And honestly, that’ll depend on the winner. See, there are just some contests that I don’t enter because I’m not the biggest fan of what is being given away.

So, for my contest the winner will get a $25 gift certificate to his/her choice of whatever I can purchase or buy online (without huge shipping charges). Meaning, I know that the area I’m moving to has gift cards I can purchase for Target, Wal-Mart, Bed Bath & Beyond, malls, Qdoba, iTunes, etc.  Now, if you have a local store/food place that is just in your area, chances are I can’t get a gift card to there. But, I’ll try. So, as long as I can get one, you’ll win a $25 gift card of your choice to what you want!

Good luck!

GIVEAWAY for my 100th post!

God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today.  Have you used one to say “thank you?”
~William A. Ward

So my 100th post is coming up very soon.  Like this is my 98th post.  I just realized I should do something special for my 100th post. Now, we don’t have a lot of money right now and have to really save money just in case I have to go on unemployment if I don’t have a job when I move to Washington, so I can’t spend a lot.

But, hey, a freebie is a freebie, right?  I’m offering a choice of a $10 gift card for iTunes or a $10 gift card to someplace else of the winner’s choice.

Leave a comment on this post and you’ll get an entry.  Want a better chance to win? Here are some other ways to enter.

  • Leave a comment (like I already mentioned)
  • Tweet about my contest (make sure you let me know you did this)
  • Announce my contest on your blog (again, make sure you let me know you did this)
  • Ask a question that you’d like me to answer in my 100th post (ya know, to learn more about me or get my opinion on things, etc)

So, in theory, you can get four different entries. And since I don’t have many readers, you have a good chance to win, anyway!  I’ll use the random number chooser thingy to impartially pick the winner. You have until next Sunday (27DEC) at 1200 EST (that’s noon on the East Coast!) to enter.

In my 100th  post, I’ll answer your questions and maybe provide you with more information (that you didn’t ask! ha!) about me.

Good luck!
