I love learning more about my fellow MilSpouse bloggers. So I created a weekly meme. Each week, I’ll post a list of questions on Thursday (so you can have your blog ready on Friday). (Please forgive me if I can’t get to visit everyone’s blogs the next few weeks. I am having a hard time accessing my own blog from the Army Internet!)

I was going to feature one question suggested by MFF participants each week, but since you all came up with such great questions last week, I’m going to have to do more than one a week! This week’s questions are:

1. What is a weird/funny superstition that you have? (from A{muse}ing Mommy on a Pink Park Bench)
Oh gosh. I hate to admit this. I am intensely afraid of going into the bathroom in the dark, especially looking in the mirror. I always, ALWAYS have to switch on the light.  I really think this stems from my best friend’s (from elementary school) mom teaching us about “Bloody Mary” in the mirror. She tried to scare us. And she did. Totally. Now, I just refuse to do it.

2. What are your hopes and dreams for the years AFTER the military? After all, we aren’t in it forever! (from Stetsons, Spurs and Stilettos)
Um, that’s a long way off… especially if I go to active duty after Huzzy is done. But, I hope to finish up raising our children and settle somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Specifically Western Washington or Oregon. I hope to get back into horses and do a bunch of traveling… both with the kids (and maybe their kids) and just with Huzzy. Retirement at some point would be nice!

3. Since [this] month is National Apple Month (no really!), I’d probably ask: What is your yummiest apple recipe? (from NH Girl Displaced)
Um, I don’t really have one. So I guess I’m going to have to go with a Betty Crocker recipe for Caramel Apple Crisp. Mmm… I love apple crisp!

4. How long have you gone as a military spouse without talking to your husband/wife during service? (from A Navy Princess and Her Little Sailors)
Probably not as long as some people as we are only staring down our third deployment (in one year). But our first one together last year, we went seven weeks with no email or phone calls. That was over Thanksgiving and Christmas. I got my first phone call and e-mail just two days before the New Year. That was a rough period, especially since I was still in Michigan and really had no one around me that understood what I was going through. I wished I had been near my FRG at that point.

5. I occasionally watch When I was 17… on MTV. So, what was something that was significant about your 17th year of life? (fromAshley Amazing)
Hmm… let’s see. I was in my senior year of high school. It was when I chose my college and was accepted. I was a waitress at Cracker Barrel. I also had to sell my horse (the last of them) because I was going to college and it wasn’t fair for her not to be used/shown/paid attention to while I was in college. That was painful.

I love learning more about my fellow MilSpouse bloggers! MilSpouse Friday Fill-in is taking off even better than I could have ever hoped. I learned so much about my fellow bloggers and can’t wait to learn more… and hopefully even MORE will join in as we go.

Wow! I can’t believe this is our 10th MFF!

1. What secret indulgence do you act on while your spouse is away? (from Devil Dog Darling)
Um, not getting dressed and watching pointless TV (like Toddlers and Tiaras… what a trainwreck that I can’t stay away from!). All. Day. Long.

2. If you were a spice, what would you be? (from New Girl On Post)
I would have to say mint. It’s refreshing and clean… and it goes great with chocolate!

3. Where do you go for support when your significant other is deployed? (from Texas Meets Washington)
I would have to say my Twitter friends. They are mostly MilSpouses and are more of a support network than I have in real life.

4. What is the oldest thing you own? (from A Troop’s Girl)
It would have to be the diamond necklace my grandma gave me. Not the necklace, but the diamond. It was the diamond from my great-great aunt’s engagement ring. I was originally going to wear it for my wedding, but after my dad died, I ended up wearing his favorite ring that I had made into a necklace.

5. How did you vision your future pre-military? (from Daddy’s Duty)
Not this, for sure! I never wanted to marry a military man. I wanted the typical American house with my husband working 8-5 and having weekends off. I was hoping (still am) that when we had kids, I could either work part-time or as a full-time stay-at-home mom. We’d have horses (not really possible as a military family), grow up in a small-ish town where everyone knew everyone and you graduated with the kids you went to kindergarten with.

And I sure as HECK never, ever thought in a million years that I’d ever be in the military myself. Never. People I grew up with still don’t believe it.

Now, I am imagining all the possibilities our future kids will have to see the world and learn the importance of honor and duty.

1. What is ONE thing you’d like civilians to understand about being a military family?

I would like civilians to understand that we do not get “free” housing and healthcare… it’s all part of the package and if we didn’t get those, we’d get bigger paychecks! ‘Cause military paychecks aren’t much compared to the sacrifice. And along those lines… we pay taxes, too, so using the “my taxes pay for you!” line doesn’t work with me.

And one parting note… your husband taking a week or two business trip where he gets to sleep in a hotel with a view, have maid service and have daily access to a phone/Internet DOES NOT mean you understand how hard deployments are. But thanks for trying to understand.

2. What is your favorite mistake?

That would have to be allowing a strange man I’d met on the Internet come to my house–where I lived alone–in the middle of the night while I was (legally) high on painkillers. Luckily he turned out to be a pretty great guy. Ya know, since I married him and all!

3. What indulgence could you give up for a year?

Soda. I love it and it’d be hard to break, but as long as I had iced tea, I’d be fine. And maybe flavored water every now and then.

4. If you could be a winged animal, what would you be?

I would be a Swallow because I think it’d be tons of fun to dive-bomb unsuspecting people and animals. And people would make a big deal of me arriving at San Juan Capistrano. As a Swallow, I’d also not be the showy bird that everyone wanted to hunt down and then I could (hopefully) hide from hawks. And children with sticks. But then I’d just dive-bomb them, too.

5. What is one question you’d like to see asked in a future MFF?

I’ve come up with a lot of these, so this is your turn! I plan to use some of them in upcoming weeks (though I still have like a year of questions in a folder!
