Infertility Acronyms

Here are some acronyms that I’ve learned while starting my journey TTC and through IF. It took me a while to figure it out, so hopefully this helps someone else.  I’m sure I’ll add some more as I go. Feel free to suggest additions.

AF– Aunt Flo (your period)

AI- Artificial insemination

ART- Assisted Reproductive Technology

BBT- Basal body temperature (waking temperature)

BCP- Birth control pills

BD- Baby dance (s-e-x)

Beta- Beta test (blood test to check HCG/pregnancy hormone levels)

BFN-  Big fat negative (on a pregnancy test)

BFP-  Big fat positive (on a pregnancy test)

BW- Blood work

CD- Cycle day

CF- Cervical fluid

CM- Cervical mucus

COH-  Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation (injectable medications)

CP- Cervical position

DE- Donor eggs

DOR- Diminished ovarian reserve

DPIUI- Days post intra-uterine insemination

DPO- Days post ovulation

DPR- Days post retrieval (of eggs)

DPT- Days post transfer (of eggs)/Days post trigger (of HcG, which makes you ovulate)

DP3DT- Days post 3-day transfer (after IVF… that is, transferring an embryo three days after it was artificially inseminated)

DP5DT- Days post 5-day transfer (after IVF… that is, transferring an embryo five days after it was artificially inseminated)

Dx- Diagnosis

E2- Estradriol

ENDO- Endometriosis

ER- Egg retrieval

ET- Embryo transfer

EWCM- Egg white cervical mucus

FE- Frozen embryo

FET- Frozen embryo transfer

FMP- First morning pee

FP- Follicular phase

FSH- Follicle stimulating hormone

GIFT- Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer

HCG- Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (pregnancy hormone, which is what pregnancy tests detect)

HPT- Home pregnancy test

HRT- Hormone replacement therapy

HSC- Hysteroscopy (a way to check the lining of your uterus)

HSG- Hysterosalpingogram (test that sends dye through your cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes to check for abnormalities/see if they are clear)

ICSI- Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (injecting sperm into an egg rather than letting them fertilize naturally)

IF- Infertility

IUI- Intra-uterine insemination

IVF-  In-vitro fertilization

LH- Luteinizing hormone (hormone that surges just prior to ovulation… an OPK can usually detect this)

LMP- Last menstrual period

LP- Luteal phase (the period after ovulation and before the onset of the next period… same as the TWW)

LPD- Luteal phase defect (most people need at least a 10 day LP to keep a pregnancy, an LPD is where there is a defect in the LP)

MC- Miscarriage

MFI- Male factor infertility

O- Ovulation

OPK- Ovulation Prediction Kit (test that detects the luteinizing hormone in a woman before she ovulates)

PCOS- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

PG- Pregnant

PIO- Progesterone in Oil (an intramuscular shot that goes in your gluteus maximas)

POAS- Pee on a stick (as in, pregnancy test or ovulation test)

POF- Premature ovarian failure

RE- Reproductive endocrinologist (infertility specialist)

REI- Reproductive endocrinologist and infertility (infertility specialist)

SA- Semen analysis

SHG- Sonohysterogram

SI- Secondary infertility (infertility trying to have additional children after having no issues conceiving the first)

SIS- Saline Infusion Sonogram (saline put in your uterus to check to make sure it looks normal/has no fibroids, etc)

Stim/Stimming- Using drugs to stimulate ovaries to produce eggs/better quality eggs/more eggs

TCOYF- Taking Charge of Your Fertility (the book that CHANGED MY LIFE… every female should read this whether they are trying to TTC or not)

TSH- Thyroid stimulating hormone

TTC- Trying to conceive

TWW/2WW- Two week wait. (the period of time starting the day after ovulation and ending the first day of your period. The actual time may vary as not everyone goes 14 days after ovulation before their period starts… same as the LP)

US- Ultrasound
